Cab 412

“This was a new kind of chair, constructed totally out of leather, much cloned since then.” Thus Mario Bellini describes Cab, a best-seller that he designed in the 1970s, which is now a signature piece in Cassina’s I Contemporanei collection. Cab was the first-ever chair to feature a free-standing leather structure, inspired by how our skin fits over our skeleton. The upholstery consists of twenty-one pieces of saddle leather. They undergo twenty-two discrete procedures, again by hand. The pieces are sewn together only when their outer edges have been trimmed to ensure a perfect fit. Once assembled, the cover is attached to the chair’s steel skeleton and held in place by means of a zipper fastening, as in a bespoke tailored garment. Today this model adapts and expands to meet contemporary needs. It is now available an XL model, 5cm deeper, and a Baby version, made with the same careful craftsmanship. Also available are new Plus saddle leathers in pure aniline, and some versions with a gradient effect by hand on a natural basis.

CAMELOT

Designed in keeping with the standards for advanced modularity and great comfort, the Camelot seating system allows highly-personalized configurations, thanks to the combinability of modules and the matching of materials.

Visually, it offers an intriguing contrast between the formal austerity of the structure – composed of metal supports and a cylindrical bar in wood or clad in cowhide – and the welcoming softness of the upholstered elements.

The extremely varied product range includes a number of elements of different width and depth, aimed at maximizing decor possibilities suited to the most diverse spaces. The backrest cushions feature generous proportions and enveloping goose-down padding – an invitation to sit back and relax.

Flexform’s distinct aptitude for custom tailoring is clear in the emblematic craftsmanship details.

Seat cushion and backrest upholstery are finished with elegant piping that can be selected in a contrasting color or tone-on-tone. The high degree of personalization is evident not only in the vast array of fabric or leather upholstery options, but also in the choice of metal finishes for the support frame, as well as the cylindrical bar that can be crafted in numerous types of premium wood or clad in cowhide.

Capitol Complex/Office Chair

The Capitol Complex Office Chair is one of the most recognisable in Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex, found throughout the offices of the Secretariat. The independent pieces, including the side bars in an inverted “V” supporting the armrests, are all made of solid wood. The woven backrest and seat, stretched across a wooden frame, are elements common in the area, much like the use of local woods like teak. Similar to the better-known office chair, this armless chair also uses the “V” approach to sidebars, in this case shorter as they do not extend to the arms. Importance, instead, is given to the seating/ backrest sequence in Viennese woven cane, connected with an immense geometric section supported by two wooden profiles, and coplanar legs, that together, are simple and yet, powerful at the same time. Cassina’s reissue offers the classic version in teak, and three versions in natural, stained black and stained dark walnut oak.

CARLOTTA

An object of undisputed functionality, the folding chair can boast a thousand years of history. Originally used as a field chair, with the expansion of the film industry it gained iconic status as a director’s chair, thanks to its ease of transport between sets.

Its legendary qualities – comfortable, lightweight and easy to carry – inspired Antonio Citterio and Flexform to give it a new interpretation as the Luchino armchair.

Made of solid hand-turned and finished wood, with the seat and backrest in cowhide, the Luchino armchair – available in both dining and lounge versions – features refined joints that enable easy folding and transport.

Deceptively simple at first glance, the Luchino armchair reveals exquisite wood craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail in the small metal components that regulate its folding mechanism.

A perfect blend of elegance and practicality, the Luchino dining chair is at home with any of the tables in the collection, while the lounge chair fits seamlessly in any living space, by itself or paired with Flexform sofas.

Structure
The archetypical folding chair, Carlotta was reinterpreted in a contemporary vein with a light hand and a pitch-perfect marriage of sophisticated materials, like metal and cowhide. The joint screws, clearly visible on the metal structure, emphasize the austere, unornamented design that sets this armchair apart. It comes in an array of finshings. The seat, seat back and arm rests are upholstered in cowhide, in all the colors available in the Flexform collection palette. The Carlotta small armchair can be paired with its namesake folding footstool.

CESTONE | CESTONE 09

The Cestone sofa was designed to be placed at the center of the living room. In the spotlight are the sofa’s back and sides, parts that cannot usually be counted on to bring added value. Instead, the back and sides of the Cestone sofa are made from metal frames upholstered with woven strips of cowhide. The strips are in two different widths, and two options are available for the irregular woven pattern. The cowhide strips can be closely woven, forming a compact surface; or more loosely woven, allowing the underlying upholstery fabric to show through. The resulting ‘checkerboard’ pattern makes a strong visual statement in aesthetically-pleasing contrast to the soft, perfectly-proportioned upholstered parts.  The Cestone sofa can be paired with its eponymous coffee tables with wood top in a selection of stain finishes that create a delightful textural contrast with the warmth of the cowhide.

Committee

The Indian city of Chandigarh – capital of the Punjab and utopian model of a modernistic avant-garde urban master plan created in the 1950s – continues to wield its charm and cultural fascination and to fuel the etymological research of Cassina in its stewardship of the designer’s plans. Designed specifically by Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, to furnish the spaces in the grand political and public buildings, the pieces have been reinterpreted, while staying true to the original project. Thus, the Committee Chair now becomes part of the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret tribute collection. Featuring restrained, elegant lines – and the iconic upside-down V-shaped lateral supports – the Committee Chair is presented in its original version with armrests, and in a new interpretation without armrests, for a more versatile fit in both the living and dining rooms. The seat structure, available in the historic teak version and in natural oak or oak stained black, blends harmoniously with the soft upholstered parts for comfortable, supported seating. Available in fabric or leather, the upholstery is removable to facilitate replacement of the material around the armrests. Each piece in the collection is the utmost expression of the high quality and excellence that distinguish Cassina products by virtue of the “Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret” logo on the wood structure as well as the Cassina label sewn onto the back side of the backrest.
